VEED OpenEdit: let a coding agent caption and edit your video
VEED's open-source editing pipeline with no GUI: a coding agent such as Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI makes the edit and renders an MP4 [2].
- Does
- Captions, cuts and motion graphics from a text prompt
- Best for
- Developer vloggers and agencies using coding agents
- Cost
- Free; VEED transcription and AI tools use your VEED limits and credits [1]
- Runs
- Locally, with optional VEED cloud services
OpenEdit installs as an agent skill. The agent transcribes, builds the edit as an HTML page, renders and checks the frames, and returns the file [2]. Each tool is a command in @veedstudio/openedit-cli [2][4]. Transcription: WhisperX locally for free, VEED's hosted service (free tier about ten minutes a month) or your own Whisper-format JSON [2].
What it does
- Licence
- Apache-2.0 for the pipeline [3][2]; VEED's renderer binaries are closed source, under PolyForm Shield 1.0.0 [1]
- Agents
- Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI [2]
- Platforms
- README: macOS, Windows or Linux, Node 20.18.1+ [2]. Help centre: Apple Silicon, macOS 26 only [1]
- Output
- MP4 with burned-in subtitles, saved in
runs/with its code [2]; silent H.264 (ProRes 4444 with--transparent) until audio is added [4] - CLI
@veedstudio/openedit-cli: transcribe, render, apply-edl, mix-audio, concat-videos, veed-project and more [4]- Status
- Beta [1]

Requirements and setup
- Node 20.18.1+ and Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI [2].
- ffmpeg: the first run installs it (Homebrew on Mac with your approval, user folder on Windows); on Linux, run the printed commands [2].
- Local transcription:
uvorpipx; about 2 GB of model downloads on first run [2]. - A veed.io account for VEED transcription or AI tools only [1].
Licence, cost and privacy
- Renderer binaries are free to use, you can sell the output, and Chrome rendering is an alternative [1]. Pipeline: Apache-2.0 [3].
- WhisperX: nothing leaves your machine. VEED's hosted transcription uploads and stores the file for that job [2]; VEED says only audio is uploaded for captions [1].
- Fabric generation, background removal and lip sync spend VEED AI credits or your fal key; generation quotes a price and waits for your yes [4][2].
Limitations
- Platform claims conflict: the README says macOS was tested on Tahoe 26.0 [2]; the help centre rules out Intel, Windows and Linux [1].
- Beta: captions are most polished; reframing, motion graphics, slides-to-video and web capture are still being improved [1].
- Transcripts without word timings are refused [2].
- 'Up to 2.2x faster' rendering is VEED's internal benchmark claim [1].
- Linux is least tested; CI covers macOS and Windows [2].
Quick start
In your project folder, install the skill, open your agent and ask for an edit [2].
