Wistia MCP server, CLI and API

Wistia publishes an official MCP server at https://api.wistia.com/mcp/api, which lets an AI assistant act on your Wistia account, plus the wistia CLI and the Data API [1][2][3]. Only account owners and managers can use the MCP server, and in Claude every Wistia action asks for approval by default [1].

What an assistant can do

All tools are exposed unless you limit them. The 12 toolsets [1]:

  • media: upload, edit, organise and find videos and other files [1]
  • captions: captions, translations and audio descriptions [1]
  • analytics and stats: engagement totals, plus play and visitor data down to single visitors and events [1]
  • remix: create and export videos with Remix [1]
  • folders, channels, webinars, customizations, tags, sharing and account [1]

Read and write actions

Read-only 'get' actions and actions that create or destroy data are separate groups, each with its own approval setting [1]. Wistia does not publish every tool name; your client lists them after you connect.

?toolsets= removes the groups you do not name, such as webinars or sharing; Wistia says some agents pick tools more reliably from a shorter list. A few tools always stay, mainly the one that polls background jobs [1].

CLI commands cover media upload, import, update, copy, archive, trim and swap, plus tags and search [2].

How to connect

Claude web or desktop: Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector, paste the server URL, then Connect and sign in. Custom connectors work on Claude Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise [1].

ChatGPT (OAuth only): install Wistia's app, or add a custom connector in Developer mode on the web [1].

Claude Code with OAuth: run the first command, restart Claude Code, run /mcp, select wistia, choose Authenticate. With an access token, use the second command and skip Authenticate [1].

CLI: install, then wistia configure stores a token in your system keychain. Or set WISTIA_CLI_BEARER_AUTH, or pass --bearer-auth per command [2].

Tokens and limits

  • A token can be copied only when it is created [3].
  • Listing media needs 'Read all folder and media data'. Updating needs 'Read, update & delete anything', so a token that can edit can also delete [4][5].
  • Where there is no keychain, such as CI, the CLI falls back to ~/.config/wistia/config.yaml [2].
  • The MCP guide states no plan requirements or rate limits.

Approvals

  • Set each action or group to Always allow, Ask each time or Never allow. Wistia suggests always allowing 'get' actions and keeping create and destroy actions on approval [1].
  • For research-only agents, use a read-only token [4]. Keep tokens out of source control, as you would passwords [2].
