Descript MCP server, CLI and API

Descript's MCP server, https://api.descript.com/v2/mcp, signs in with your Descript login. An assistant can import media, run Underlord edits, search and organise projects, and publish to a Descript web link [3][4]. Descript also has a public API (one token per Drive) and an official CLI, @descript/platform-cli [7][6].

What an assistant can do

No delete action is listed in the MCP or API docs.

  • Import media and create projects, including one written from a prompt [3][7]
  • Edit with Underlord: captions, filler-word removal, Studio Sound, scenes, highlight reels [7]
  • Search the Drive for projects, folders, layout packs and media; organise projects into folders [3]
  • Target a specific composition (an edit inside a project) [3]
  • Publish to a Descript web link and get signed URLs to the MP4 or audio [3]
  • Export transcripts as text, Markdown, HTML, RTF or SRT; DOCX is API only [3][7]
  • Track or cancel jobs [3]

Limits

  • Rendered files cannot be downloaded without publishing; export finished files in the Descript app [3].
  • YouTube URLs cannot be imported. Use a direct file link, an upload, or a Google Drive or Dropbox link [3].
  • Each connection or token covers one Drive. To switch, log out of Descript on the web and reconnect [3][7].
  • Job history is kept for 30 days [3].

How to connect

Claude: Customize, Connectors, search Descript, click +, then Connect, sign in, Allow. It uses the Drive you are signed into [5]. Turn on network egress and code execution under Settings, Capabilities; Descript recommends Chat mode over Cowork [5].

Other clients, including Claude Code: add a custom connector with the server URL and OAuth [4]. Descript does not print the Claude Code command below; it is built from that URL.

CLI: install from npm and save your API token (App settings, API tokens; shown once) [6][7].

Credits and plans

  • Imports spend media minutes and Underlord edits spend AI credits, through MCP or API [7].
  • Premium Underlord models need a paid plan [1].
  • No plan requirement for the API or MCP is stated.
  • Anyone with your API token can spend your media minutes and AI credits [7].
  • On team or enterprise plans of your AI assistant, an admin may need to allow custom connectors [3].

Approvals

  • Descript describes no approval prompts; your AI client's connector settings decide whether actions run without asking.
